Power to the people.
Greetings Tellurics, who showed interest in the Tunisian race to freedom or fighting their own battles.
Through this article i wanted to enlighten the international public regarding the Presidential election and something i saw in more than one occasion in western media, that Tunisians are facing a dilemma. Choosing between a conservative (more like an Islamist in their eyes) and a liberal, which is a misleading idea in my humble opinion.
I am a 25 years old Tunisian software Engineer with no interest in politic nor affiliated with any party. My focus is on reforming the educational system, something I'm good at and been doing while i was studying. I don't have the necessary skills nor interest in joining the political arena. I leave that to my fellow patriots. Every one of us will opt for change from his place.
I defend Freedom of religion, equality between men and women, Reforming the educational system, Environmental issues.. These are the things i advocate, the things i believe in.
So having a conservative party or president at the head of the state isn't something that i would push forth in different circumstances.
What is at stake in this election is not religion, it's the will of the people and the desire for change. A true democracy and a thrilling sense of duty.
Voters chose candidates out of the system. Kais Said who never voted once in his life and considered the current system corrupt, and Nabil Karoui, a businessman with zero experience in politics.
I am not going to discuss who's better and what's best for Tunisia. I respect the will of the people and i trust our institutions. We are not a perfect society, and you would expect some mistakes from a young democracy.
We are not choosing based on religion, on the contrary we are choosing based on competence and only competence.
Tunisia is a civil society, whose religion is Islam. A country that tries to keep ties with its culture and ethics while opting to become a modern society that respects personal freedoms and human rights. A complex task at hand considering our Geo-political situation and the security challenges after the revolution of 2011. Yet we proved in more than one occasion that we are the right people for the job.
Many neighboring countries envy us for this historical moment but fear not my friends, as The bird that left its cage, will bring froth the wave of change.
